I’ve owned two HVAC businesses. I’ve also worked within companies backed by venture capital. After experiencing both—the successes, the lessons, and a few moments of real clarity—I chose to return to running my own operation.
The name I chose says everything: Ethical Mechanical.
When people ask why I named my company that, I usually smile and say, “The name says it all.” But behind that name is a story worth sharing—not to criticize, but because I know others in the industry may be navigating similar experiences.
Early in my career, I did what many in the trades aspire to do—I went out on my own. Over the years, I built and operated two HVAC businesses, each for about five years. That’s a decade of ownership grounded in long hours, customer trust, and a commitment to doing the job right.
When you own a business in the trades, your reputation is everything. You know your customers by name. You show up when you say you will. You charge fairly, and you stand behind your work.
That’s the foundation I built—simple, honest, and consistent.
Later, I stepped into the venture capital-backed side of the industry, spending nearly seven years working with multiple organizations across Northern and Southern California. I served in leadership roles, including General Manager and Operations Manager, which gave me a front-row seat to how these businesses operate at scale.
I gained valuable experience during that time. But I also saw a shift in priorities that didn’t align with how I believe this industry should operate.
When a business begins to view its people as line items rather than its greatest asset, something important changes—and both employees and customers feel it.
The differences weren’t defined by one moment, but by a series of small patterns:
• Increased emphasis on upselling rather than accurate diagnosis
• Customer relationships measured primarily by metrics
• Technicians treated more as production drivers than skilled professionals
• Decisions made far from the field, without practical context
• Speed and volume prioritized over quality and accountability
In the trades, trust is everything. When a homeowner invites you into their home, they’re placing confidence in your expertise and integrity. That trust should never be compromised.
Returning to run my own company was an intentional decision. I wanted a business that reflects not just what we do, but how we do it.
Ethical Mechanical, headquartered in Solano County, is built on that principle. We’re expanding into San Francisco, Sacramento, and San Diego—markets I know well and care deeply about.
Our commitment is simple:
• Honest diagnostics—even when it means not making a sale
• Respect for technicians as professionals and key contributors
• Treating customers like people, not transactions
This isn’t a slogan—it’s the standard we operate by every day.
For HVAC owners considering private equity opportunities, there are valid reasons to explore those paths. But it’s important to ask thoughtful questions—about culture, long-term vision, and how both employees and customers will be treated.
For those entering the trades, your skills carry real value. A business built on integrity and craftsmanship can stand the test of time
• No upsells. No games. Just honest work. We diagnose the problem, explain your options, and fix what actually needs fixing.
• Built on trust. Backed by experience. Veteran-led and employee-run. No pressure, just clear answers and solid work.
• Fair work. Straight answers. You’ll know what’s wrong, what it costs, and why—before anything gets done.
• Do the job right. Treat people right. No commission-driven technicians. Just experienced professionals focused on the right outcome.
• Honest service, start to finish. From first call to final invoice, we keep it clear, fair, and straightforward.
• What needs fixing. Nothing more. We don’t push replacements when repairs make sense. We show you the difference.
• Real people. Real work. Fair price. Locally owned, veteran-led, and accountable to the work we do every day.
• No pressure. Just the right solution. We walk you through options so you can make the decision that fits your home and budget.
• We fix problems, not sell upgrades. Our job is to solve the issue—not turn it into something bigger than it is.
• The way service work should be. Independent, experienced, and built around doing right by the customer.
For me, the answer came down to two words.
I built something I’m proud of, and every day the name serves as a reminder of what we stand for:
